Make pharmacy benefit managers accountable
It is high time that pharmacy benefit managers are held accountable and Rep. James Comer is stepping up to the plate.
Pharmacy benefit managers have monopolized the medical market for far too long with their anti-patient practices. From pocketing rebates that manufacturers issue to standing directly in the way of accessing lifesaving medications, it’s clear that these middlemen are not in the business of helping patients like they claim.
Currently, three pharmacy benefit managers control 80% of the prescription drug market, and until now, they have done so with little to no oversight.
This is why I am thankful that Representative Comer recently launched an investigation into their practices.
He is using his leadership as the House Committee on Oversight and Accountability Chairman in the right way, and his efforts to shine a light on the darkest corner of the healthcare space is a step in the direction for much needed change and transparency.
I hope other lawmakers in Congress also recognize the issues pharmacy benefit managers are creating for patients and their families and prioritize legislation that will reign in their power.
